Witness Preparation
Psychological Preparation: Identifying and Addressing Emotional Barriers
Many witnesses face emotional blocks that make it difficult for them to convey their stories fully and accurately. These can range from fear of public speaking to lingering trauma from past experiences to guilt about their supposed role in the incident and outcome to struggles with finding their previous “self” amidst their injuries. Effective witness preparation must go beyond the bounds of traditional preparation dealing with content of a witness’ testimony and delve into the psychological blocks affecting their delivery.
By helping witnesses recognize and work through their underlying fears or discomfort, we empower them to approach the stand with greater authenticity. When witnesses are emotionally grounded, they’re able to testify more confidently and in a way that resonates truthfully with the jury, ultimately enhancing their credibility.
Araditional Preparation: Building Confidence and Clarity
Once we have addressed the underlying psychological issues, we then work with you and the witness through the essential elements of their testimony, helping them anticipate questions and structure responses that are concise, relevant, and aligned with the facts. We practice mock questioning and provide feedback on aspects like tone, body language, and word choice. This approach ensures witnesses are well-prepared for direct examination, cross-examination, and any spontaneous questions that may arise.
Why This Matters
This comprehensive approach to witness preparation doesn’t just focus on “what” the witness should say, but on “how” they say it—and perhaps more importantly, on “why” they may struggle to express certain truths. By clearing emotional barriers, we allow witnesses to testify with full honesty, making their testimony not only persuasive but also deeply authentic.
